Science: Potato Planting with Grammy!

Yesterday, our class planted cut up potatoes to grow potatoes!

First, we had to put soil in some big pots that Grammy brought in for us. We had to put newspaper on the bottom of the pot so the water won't drain out of the holes.

All of the kids got a chance to scoop in some soil with their hands to fill the pot up with about 4 inches of soil.

Next, we had to plant our cut up potatoes with their "eyes to the sky" as Grammy said.

Finally, we needed to water the soil so the potatoes can grow!

Grammy also brought us a delicious snack of potato sticks, potato chips and a cheese sandwich on- you guessed it- Potato BREAD!! YUM! Thanks again Grammy!
We wrote about our predictions and what we want to know about growing potatoes in our Science Journals and we are going to write about our observations as our potatoes grow over the next few weeks!

The class enjoyed our trip to the Jacksonville Zoo on March 1st. The students visited the Education Center where they learned about a variety of animal life cycles and how animals grow and change - they also had a chance to pet a rabbit and snake, and see a parrot and salamander! Thank you to all of our chaperones who joined us for our fun day at the zoo!

Brooke was our Star Student this week and she shared her photos and some yummy fruit today in class. Brooke is such a sweet girl who always tries her best in class. She is a friend to everyone and is an amazing artist! Her drawings are better than Ms. McAvoy and Mrs. Ridout's! Brooke's mom joined us today and brought yummy blueberries, pomegranate and mango for a treat. Thanks again to Brooke and her Mom!

Dr. Seuss Flag Raising!

All of the Alimacani 1st graders did an amazing job at the Flag Raising performance today! We paid tribute to the one and only Dr. Seuss on his birthday by singing a fun version of the Happy Birthday song that got everyone singing and dancing in the courtyard. We also had some students read some of his most famous quotes. Everyone did an amazing job- and hey, we pulled it off on the week of our Zoo field trip! Kudos to all of our students and our awesome 1st grade teachers!!!;)

Special thanks to all of our parents who joined us and to Mrs. Paxton for taking these pictures- you rock! :)
